One of the main reasons for forming the SMSA was to ensure that we maintain access to our flying sites and promote safe flying.
The official Club site comprises of Burton Dassett Country Park and Sunrising Hill. Flying should be in accordance with the general rules laid down by the BMFA Members Handbook and the SMSA official regulations. Members of the SMSA are required to have BMFA membership.
By working with Warwickshire County Council and the Estate Management at Upton House we have agreed a set of rules that if followed will ensure that we have continued use of both Burton Dassett and Edge Hill.
Below lists those rules and it is incumbent on us as an association and as individuals to follow this set of rules for the long term good of the sport, the SMSA and all of its members.
When flying at any site:
- Follow the country-side code, specifically keeping the site clean and tidy. Take home or place in a bin any litter, even if it is not yours
- Be friendly and polite to others using the site. We share our flying sites with members of the public and we were all interested observers once upon a time
- Fly safely by following the BMFA guide lines and be aware of others around you
- Flying – No more than 20 models should be in the air at any one time (As defined in the annual risk assessment)
- Guest or visitor flyers are not allowed. The SMSA is a member's only club, with membership fees set at a level to make the club accessible to all
- Mobile phones can be a source of interference. Do not use your phone within 10 meters / 30 feet of the flight line
- Combat flying is strictly forbidden
- The club fly's on even frequencies only, due to another club in the area flying on odd frequencies
- All incidents must be reported promptly to our Safety Officer at Safety@SMSA.co.uk
When flying at Burton Dassett:
- Parking – Park on the gravel if the grass is soft or in a poor condition. Do not obstruct pathways or hinder access to other users of the park
- Restrictions – No flying from the North / North East slope during bank holiday weekends or if you believe Burton Dassett is too busy for it to be safe to fly
- North / North East Slope – Launch from the east end of the slope and only land at the north east end of the slope away from the car park
- Even frequencies only to be used on this slope
When flying at Edge Hill (Sunrising Hill)
- Parking – Always park on the gate / slope side of the road without parking directly in front of the gate
- Conservation area – Keep out of these areas at all times, including landing and storing of models whilst flying. (The conservation area is the fallow area of land around the cropped area of the field)
- Landing – Always land on the slope side of the fence. Landing in the field behind the hill is strictly out of bounds and has caused the loss of the slope in the past.
- Flying – Do not fly over the farm stables or equestrian grounds
